Hello my name is David Cowan I am here to talk to you about the Digital Aquarium an amazing new resource and calming strategy for educators and caregivers working with individuals affected by Autism spectrum disorders. |
 Before discussing the Digital Aquarium a little background about me. In 2007 an educator friend of mine started using my series of videos as a calming strategy and transitioning tool while working with children affected by ASD.
Now, when I was going to school in the 1960’s the incidence of Autism was about 1 in 20,000 and by the time my niece was born in 1990 the incidence of autism was approximately 1 in 10,000. Today, in 2009, 1 in 150 children are affected by some variation of autism spectrum disorder.

Hello again. As we previously discussed, in 2009 the Digital Aquarium donated enough copies of the Digital Aquarium Relaxation DVDs to the Summer school Autism camp so that every teacher would have a copy of the Digital Aquarium. Although the feedback we received is anecdotal the results are no less stunning. |
Personally, I have observed and recorded a classroom of Pre K, Kindergarten, and first graders transition from a very active and heightened state to a calm structured activity in less than 5 minutes by starting the Digital Aquarium and dimming the lights. I have witnessed middle and high school teachers transition a group of children with varying degrees of ASD from preferred outdoor water activities to a less preferred structured learning experience within 5-6 minutes with the Digital Aquarium playing on the projector screen. Finally, I have seen a young child known for out of control behavior, begin to escalate, but then brought back to a calm state with their attention being redirected to the Digital Aquarium. These are just a few examples of the calming effect the Digital Aquarium has on children and adolescents when used as a low cost resource in a classroom or group setting. The fact of the matter is, the Digital Aquarium is a behavioral resource for caregivers and educators that works in many instances. |

Although we have described a few examples of the low cost calming effect the Digital Aquarium has when used in the classroom or group setting.
